His and hers calligraphy.  I hope you guys like them (and all the other stuff I sent you!)!

I asked Erik if it was dorky to put them up on our bedroom door and he answered “Yeah, but what else is new?” >:(
They’re going up on the door anyways!

How I Make These Things

pbcwrites:

So I’ve been making little “illuminated” things like this:

image

This is all super new to me and you may be surprised to learn, judging by the *incredible* professional quality of literally everything I have ever posted, that I have no training or experience or talent as an artist of any kind and…

Like it? I love it! Seeing the process is great too. Also you should know that you chose my favorite color combination: black and gold/yellows.

Among her many amazing qualities, my friend Pau is the world’s biggest Batman fan.  I have a letter with some pens, calligraphy, and a special art surprise (which I’ll post after she gets it) that has been sitting on my desk , waiting to be mailed, for way too long.  I’m usually late mailing things, so I pack the envelopes with more stuff to make up for it.
Pau introduced me to Gotham Central, which was such a great read.  I had the idea of writing out Pau’s name with the decoration in the ‘P’ being the bat signal.  I quickly learned that the bat signal has evolved over time, so there are different styles of bat to choose from.  I went with the one from the cover of Gotham Central #1 as a nod to my friendship with Pau and her having gotten me hooked on the series.
I sweated this little illuminated “Bat-Pau” more than anything I’ve made so far.  However you think they end up looking, these things look like absolute garbage until I start adding the colors and metallics.  The urge to crumple this up and pretend it never happened was especially strong, as it just was not coming together.  I’ll post the progress shots to show why this was stressing me out.  It doesn’t help that Pau is a fantastic artist - making art for artists is just stressful as heck.
I’m kinda smiling at how this turned out.  Each new thing I make is an experiment for me.  Even entertaining the idea of calling myself an artist is a super new thing in my life.  I’m vaguely embarrassed to tell people I’m a calligrapher, because I suck so bad (but I’m getting better!), even if I’m so in love with reading about and practicing calligraphy.  The idea of being both a scientist and an artist is just CRAZY TOWN, you know?
I’m not sure you needed my soul-searching along with my little calligraphy piece.  It’s that Catholic upbringing - if I don’t feel incredibly guilty about everything I do, I don’t know what to do with myself.  :P
